What you’ll do
We are looking for an Assay Scientist to join our Biologics Engineering (BE) team based in Granta Park, Cambridge UK. BE is responsible for the discovery and optimisation of biological candidate drugs across all AZ therapy areas such as oncology, respiratory and inflammation, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases. We are constantly pushing the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines to patients, with a passion for the development of in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to address unmet medical needs.
As an Assay Scientist, you will be responsible for providing critical biochemical and cell assay expertise to deliver multiple biologics drug discovery and technology development projects using state of the art technologies. This is a lab-based role involving independent design, execution and interpretation of scientific experiments, and effective communication of findings and recommendations as part of a multi-disciplinary project team. The successful candidate will also contribute to the identification and development of cutting-edge technologies that benefit biologics drug discovery and have a proven track record of creatively solving scientific challenges.
Development of biochemical and cell based 96 or 384 well binding and functional assays for use as biologics screens and pharmacological characterisation of biologics for drug discovery or technology development projects, delivering work on time and to budget
Contribution of expertise to multi-disciplinary research drug discovery and technology projects, effectively communicating recommendations and contributing to team decisions
Identification and development of new screening and automation technologies and processes
Maintaining a well-developed understanding of approaches to biologics drug discovery and applying a broader functional knowledge to support the department
Identification of creative solutions to assay, technology or drug discovery project problems
Contributing to peer reviewed publications, patents and participating at international conferences
Providing technical training to members of the team where required
Ensuring own work, and work of peers, is compliant with General Laboratory Standard, Safety, Health and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations
Essential for the role
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
Experience and technical knowledge of biologics assay development, screening and use of automation, with a commitment to quality and scientific rigour
Strong team player with good communication skills and experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams
Ability to address challenges creatively and a drive to contribute to the development of new and improved assay technologies and processes
Desirable for the role
Background in drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry
Knowledge of biologics drug discovery and in vitro pharmacology
Experience in flow cytometry and/or FACS
