Our Global Portfolio and Project Management Organization (GPPM) has a significant role to play in advancing our pipeline and delivering Growth Through Innovation by closely partnering with Research & Development (R&D) and business leaders to support decision-making, project management, and governance across our portfolio.

We seek an experienced candidate to support the transformation and optimization of the drug development operating model, or “path to governance,” at AstraZeneca. This position is responsible for driving operating model process improvement across the pipeline (Candidate Drug Investment Decision (CDID) through Commercialization Investment Decision (COMMID)). This role is essential in providing Early Global Project Teams (eGPTs) and Late-Stage Global Product Teams (GPTs) a clear, forward-thinking and efficient pathway to governance that ensures robust decision-making and alignment with AZ’s values.

You will work collaboratively across a wide array of functional areas, stakeholders and project teams to simplify and clarify governance processes and integrate ways of working into the project management and project team communities, playing a visible and influential role in AZ’s pipeline governance.

This role is open to applicants across our 3 core hub locations, UK, U.S. and Sweden.

Your new role

The position reports to the Senior Director, Pipeline Governance and Operating Model on the Global Portfolio & Project Management team. The position will work collaboratively with the ESPC and LSPC Secretariats, the Learning & Development GPPM Lead, information/contract managers on the GPO team, as well as the broader Global Portfolio & Project Management (GPPM) team and various other partners across the R&D and Commercial Units.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Drive the simplification and harmonization of the various elements supporting the path to governance (PTG) operating model. This includes developing or revising guidance documents, templates, and tools. Key initiatives may include:

    • Harmonizing the e/GPT Handbooks across the TAs

    • Amending the Late-Stage Target Product Profile (TPP) guidance and supporting the process development for Early Stage

    • Evaluate if changes are required to current PTRS benchmarks and partner with tool owner to develop and launch the online process for creating the Probability of Regulatory Success (PRS) assessments

    • Project Risk Management

    • Enhancements to investment decision guidances and templates as processes evolve within the organization

  • Serve as a consultant to project teams to provide clarity and interpretation of our path to governance processes such as PTRS development, TPP development, etc.

  • Manage the GPPM Change Management framework and tools (owned and managed by GPO)

  • Lead process development or process improvement workstreams aligned to the path to governance

This role requires critical thinking, strong communications skills that can be tailored to broad audiences, the ability to influence, the capacity to drive and maintain change within a matrixed organization, and recognition that strict confidentiality is expected in maintaining company information.

Essential skills and experience

  • Strong analytical, organizational and presentation skills with the ability to deliver clear and concise messages

  • Familiarity with the drug development and pipeline governance processes at AZ; membership on an eGPT, GPT, or CPT is preferred

  • Leadership skills, including the capacity to influence without authority

  • Ability to develop and optimize complex processes

  • BA/BS degree qualification

  • Proven skills in software applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
