We work across the entire value chain, crafting and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices required to support new medicines – from supplies for use in early toxicology studies and clinical trials to developing the technology to ensure drugs can be scaled up for commercial manufacture.

Clinical Manufacture and Supply (CM&S) plays a key role in every clinical study within AZ, through packing the investigational products into kits, labelling them for patients and delivering them to sites and patients in every corner of the world, as well as buying the external drug products needed for the study. Almost all of this is done by our external partners and Sourcing plays a key role in this service through our relations with the suppliers.

The Associate Director – Strategic Alliance, is accountable for the management of operational performance, and relationship of one or more key external supplier(s). That is closely interlinked, and an integral part of the CM&S supply network, for packed and labelled supplies.

This includes the ability to define, agree and improve Ways of Working and processes between AstraZeneca and the supplier(s). In this role you will Influence supplier processes and services, to ensure timely delivery of high quality products, and services to the customers.

It also includes accountability, to ensure transparency of strategic alignment between AZ and the supplier. You will need to deliver on the partnership objectives of both companies through the use of standard methodology, supplier management, and drive and lead change and continuous improvement programmes.

Role responsibilities:

In this role you will:

  • Lead for suppliers on behalf of CM&S, and be the lead person for performance and relationships, associated with relevant supplier(s) in Pack, Label and Distribution.

  • Handle a number of sophisticated, high value and high AZ business impact supplier accounts within portfolio

  • Be accountable for implementing, applying and owning as BPO relevant Supplier Management processes in Sourcing, and CM&S to provide efficient supplier management, including effective escalation processes both in CM&S, and with the supplier

  • Be accountable for implementing a segmented approach to supplier management, applicable to other suppliers, and support the individuals leading these

  • Develop strong links with contacts at appropriate level within the supplier(s) in order to resolve issues, optimise business performance, and develop future strategic alignment and improvement opportunities, and have the authority to engage other CM&S colleagues in order to address any issues

  • Own the operational and strategic governance teams with supplier(s), and work in close partnership with Procurement

  • Own the Supplier Plan to drive AZ supplier strategy and individual supplier strategy aligned to business needs and Category Strategy

  • Provide intelligence of supplier strategy, capability and capacity knowledge based on current and longer -term knowledge of the supplier to influence AZ supplier strategy

  • Have a broad sphere of influence within AZ and also at the supplier, agreeing, influencing and driving the strategic direction of the relationships

  • Sets clear performance objectives with the supplier and manage as part of operational interfaces to drive delivery across the total portfolio, which could include all Categories

  • Facilitate the process to resolve sophisticated advanced issues, working with the customer and supplier to sort and ensure learning is captured and incorporated into the process

  • Drive and maintain compliance with internal and external requirements

Crucial skills:

  • University Degree, preferably in drug development or supply chain related subject, or equivalent qualification/experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience of working in cross-functional and cross-cultural teams

  • Track record in identifying and driving continuous improvement and an awareness of Lean

  • Good influencing, negotiating, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills

  • Professional expertise in relevant cluster areas

  • Experience in supply chain management in a clinical research environment, with understanding of quality principles and GMP requirements

  • Commercial awareness & Partner management
