Business area – New Modalities and Parenteral Development
To meet patients’ needs, AstraZeneca recognises the opportunity to apply a diverse range of new modality technologies to design novel therapeutics. This is exemplified by the increased number of new modalities entering clinical development – currently 30% of the early pipeline now consists of new drug modalities.
The New Modalities and Parenteral Development group has accountability for developing the pipeline of both new modality projects and traditional synthetic molecules requiring parenteral delivery.
The Associate Principal Scientist role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Associate Principal Scientist: Formulation and Drug Delivery in our New Modalities and Parenteral Development (NMPD) group. This is a key role in our formulation community with specific focus on delivering our existing pipeline and building capabilities for our emerging portfolio.
The role holder will have significant experience in the formulation and development of parenteral Drug Products, ideally with knowledge of approaches for both traditional small molecule and new modalities (e.g. oligonucleotides, peptides/proteins, dendrimers, mRNA). Any gaps in knowledge of approaches for specific modality types will be addressed through a combination of training and project experience.
The individual will provide expert Formulation input to the teams delivering AstraZeneca’s portfolio of drug projects and will also have a role in identifying transformative formulation technologies for the current & future portfolio.
As an Associate Principal Scientist, you will be encouraged to work collaboratively with and support colleagues from other scientific teams in AstraZeneca (analysts, process chemists, engineers etc.) and with external partners (academics, professional organisations, technology providers etc.).
This role would suit an individual who can combine technical expertise and a scientific passion with a committed, collaborative & dependable approach to delivery .
All accountabilities have a significant impact on the development of AstraZeneca’s project portfolio and building our underpinning scientific capability. Depending on the skills and experience of the successful applicant, coaching and training will be provided to ensure optimal delivery against the role.
Desirable skills & capabilities:
BSc/PhD level education in a relevant subject area or the equivalent in experience
Experience working within a Research & Development environment in the pharmaceutical industry.
Significant experience in Formulation & Drug Delivery with emphasis on parenteral approaches. Ideally experience/understanding of product development requirements for new modality medicines (e.g. oligonucleotides, peptides/proteins, dendrimers, mRNA).
Experience of technical coaching and supervision, and leading small teams of people or scientific projects
Understanding of existing Regulatory guidelines with experience of applying this to authoring of regulatory submissions
