Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) business area

PT&D are the bridge that turns innovative science into actual medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain, designing and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices required to support new medicines – from clinical trial supplies to developing the technology to ensure drugs can be scaled up for commercial manufacture.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Associate Principal Scientist (or a Senior Scientist, dependent on experience) in formulation science to join our Oral Product Development team.

The role

As an Associate Principal Scientist in formulation design, you will be a key member of a formulation community responsible for delivering the formulation design understanding to progress the development of life-changing medicines within a dynamic team environment. We will rely on you to bring a strong understanding of drug product design, keeping both patients and healthcare professionals in mind.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead or provide expert input to the design and oral delivery of small molecules up to and including peptides, from first principles, based on Target Pharmaceutical Profile requirements.

  • Have oversight of formulation aspects of current and emerging drug projects and provide expert technical guidance, challenge and problem solving to teams and individuals.

  • Demonstrate creativity and innovation, creating and driving and supporting a culture of scientific excellence in projects.

  • Provide scientific leadership and coaching to formulation scientists within the group, supporting their development in order to build capability essential to the delivery of the present and future project portfolio.

  • Be an active member of scientific subject area networks, working collaboratively to build technical capability, with effective key business partners engagement.

  • Actively engage externally as a representative of AstraZeneca through external collaborations and initiatives, in addition to seeking to publish externally.

  • Author regulatory documentation in support of clinical trials and the commercialisation of new products.

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Degree (BSc, Master, or PhD) in Pharmaceutics, Drug Delivery, or a related subject or equivalent in experience

  • Strong background in formulation design and, preferably also in manufacturing process, from conventional to novel and complex drug delivery systems

  • Experience and good understanding of the overall drug development and commercialisation process from development, launch and ideally through life-cycle management

  • An aptitude for technical coaching and supervision, and leading small teams of people or scientific projects

  • Good understanding of the physicochemical properties of active pharmaceutical ingredient and dosage form design principles

Preferred Skills & Knowledge

  • Experience or knowledge in predictive science / digital formulation design

  • Practical experience in authoring and defending regulatory documents (e.g clinical trial applications, marketing authorisations)

  • Proven experience in leading the development and delivery of innovative science strategies within the pharmaceutical industry Experience in working cross-functionally, internationally and externally with scientific collaborators and key business partners

  • Track record of scientific excellence in terms of publications and/or conference presentations, in the field of formulation science and innovative dosage form design and development

  • Knowledge and industrial experience of pharmaceutical development in a GMP environment
