AstraZeneca’s vision in Oncology is to push the boundaries of science to change the practice of medicine, transform the lives of patients living with cancer, and to ultimately eliminate cancer as a cause of death. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas – breast, ovarian, lung and haematological cancers.

We are seeking a highly motivated Associate Principal Scientist in Immuno-Oncology with deep scientific and technical expertise in T cell biology and a track record of successful scientific leadership to join our team in Cambridge, UK. As an experienced Project Lead within the Immuno-oncology (IO) Bioscience team, you will play a pivotal role in identifying the next generation of innovative IO therapies, and in deepening our understanding of cancer immunology.

What you’ll do

  • Working in this scientific leadership role you will apply your technical and scientific experience to discover innovative therapeutic approaches.

  • As the bioscience lead on cross-functional project teams you will be responsible for developing and delivering the preclinical strategy to advance projects through the drug discovery pipeline.

  • Stay up to date with the latest discoveries in tumour immunology, share your expertise both within and beyond the bioscience group, publish peer reviewed articles on your research and develop, and lead, external collaborations.

  • Matrix manage the project bioscience team, providing advice and mentorship, interpreting complex data and making high level recommendations.

  • Apply your influencing, coaching and mentoring skills to ensure effective cross-functional working within teams.

  • Directly lead bioscience team members, helping to set goals and objectives and coordinating their professional development.

Essential for the role

  • PhD (or equivalent) in a biological science with at least several years of research experience post-PhD in academia or industry

  • Deep expertise in immune-oncology particularly around T cell immunology, plus broad understanding and enthusiasm for translating basic science into novel cancer therapies

  • Line management experience

  • General knowledge of biologics drug development

  • Track record of successful scientific leadership (e.g. grants, patents, publications, experience leading projects through milestone transitions in industry/biotec)

  • Technical expertise in preclinical model systems that can be applied to cancer immunology research

  • Excellent scientific communication skills including both written reports (e.g. manuscripts) and oral presentations to broad and diverse audiences

Desirable for the role:

  • Experience in the field of T cell exhaustion

  • Experience working in the field of IO drug discovery

  • Experience working with successful cross-functional scientific project teams

  • Authorship of patents, grants and/or publications in top-tier scientific journals
