Oral Product Development (OPD) business area
At Oral Product Development (OPD) in Macclesfield, we focus on the design and development of commercial products and processes, contribute to new product introductions and to the continuous improvement of launched products. You will join a vibrant team that is working on the next generation of medicines and play a key role in the development of new medicinal products.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an appropriately experienced Associate Principal Scientist – Process Engineering to join our Oral Product Development team.
As an Associate Principal Scientist in Process Engineering, you will be a key member of both our process engineering and wider pharmaceutics communities, responsible for delivering the manufacturing process understanding to progress the development of life-changing medicines within a dynamic team environment. We will rely on you to bring a strong understanding of drug product manufacturing processes to our oral solid dosage products, keeping both patients and long term manufacturing performance in mind.
Provide engineering expertise directly and indirectly to current and emerging drug projects and provide technical guidance, challenge and problem solving to teams and individuals.
Deliver own project(s) in a multi-skilled environment to design and develop high quality oral solid drug products and processes, for late phase clinical studies and commercialization, using your understanding of chemical and process engineering.
Drive high impact business improvements in the engineering skill area through creativity and innovation, creating and supporting a culture of scientific excellence in projects.
Drive or contribute to relevant development, regulatory and quality documentation
Lead / coach the tech transfer, risk assessment and scale up activities for a variety of manufacturing processes, to ensure appropriate process robustness, giving consultation to internal and external parties.
Champion and role model the application of modelling and simulation to the development of pharmaceutical processes.
Be an active member, or lead, scientific/technical subject area networks or expert working groups, including providing scientific leadership and coaching to junior process engineers, supporting their development in order to build capability essential to the delivery of the present and future project portfolio.
Actively engage externally as a representative of AstraZeneca through external collaborations and initiatives, in addition to seeking to publish externally.
Required Skills & Knowledge
Strong scientific background. Likely to have a PhD in chemical engineering or similar field, ideally with specialism in an area relevant to the role.
A solid knowledge of process engineering, solids processes, and experience of applying to products and processes.
Proven experience in leading and delivering innovative science strategies within the pharmaceutical industry .
Experience in technical coaching and supervision, and leading small teams of people or scientific projects
Experience and good understanding of the overall drug development and commercialisation process from development, validation launch and ideally through life-cycle management
Strong appreciation of risk management
Preferred Skills & Knowledge
Experience of continuous processing
Experience of predictive science / digital process engineering or modelling.
Practical experience in authoring and defending regulatory documents
Track record of scientific excellence in terms of publications and/or conference presentations and working externally with scientific collaborators
