What you’ll do

The Biologics Engineering team is responsible for the discovery and optimisation of biological candidate drugs to support all therapy area drug discovery pipelines and for the development of in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to support future drug discovery efforts.

Central to this effort is the implementation of digital capabilities to enhance data management and analysis. This role provides the opportunity for a talented and motivated bioinformatician with strong expertise in early drug discovery to lead the development of an end-to-end data management and analysis strategy and capabilities that will significantly impact the delivery of the novel biologics drugs of the future.

  • Lead the development of a global data management strategy within the Biologics Engineering team and drive the implementation and adoption of solutions to data analyses and management challenges

  • Work collaboratively with data and drug discovery scientists to understand and identify internal and external solutions to the scientific and technical challenges in data analyses and management.

  • Define and embed adoption of new data management and analyses processes for complex biologics workflow

  • Create strategic collaborations with management, research scientists, IT functions and program management to facilitate actionable IT solutions for biologics discovery

  • Drive external and internal cross functional collaborations to find the most effective data management solutions

  • Develop and implement data management analyses and tools and pipelines

  • Support training of team and bench scientists in data management and analyses processes, including verification of data quality

  • Oversee troubleshooting of data quality and tracking issues by collaborating with lab and other personnel

  • Build and maintain high level of experience with Biologics Engineering team’s informatics environment and act as point of contact for key scientific data initiatives

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present novel ideas to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Line management of a team of bioinformaticians across two different AZ sites, setting goals aligned to department strategy, coaching, developing and managing staff performance

  • Ensures own work, and work of peers, is compliant with Safety, Health and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations

Essential for the role

  • Experienced in relevant PhD (or equivalent graduate degree plus proven applied experience) in biological sciences

  • Development or user experience with industry standard application such as MS Excel, D360, Perkin Elmer ELN, GraphPad Prism, Genedata Biologics

  • Knowledge of molecular biology and application of data management approaches

  • People management

  • Expertise in data management including curation, data engineering, FAIR and reproducible research practices

  • Enthusiasm and persistence in the application of analytic methods to complex biological problems.

  • Capability of successfully managing IT projects in a matrix organisation

  • Strong, professional communication skills and excellent attention to detail, capable of developing good working relationships with diverse individuals across organisational boundaries and experience working within a team environment

  • Proactively develops knowledge

  • Acts with integrity and does the right thing

Desirable for the role

  • Knowledge of Pharmaceutical research and development

  • Knowledge of scripting languages required for lab automation e.g. liquid handlers

  • Experience in software development best practices
