Christina Miller Fellowship

The School of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh

This is a full time, fixed term post for 3 years

Starting salary: £33,797 – £40,322 per annum

The School of Chemistry is pleased to invite applications for the 2021 Christina Miller Research Fellowship. This three-year Fellowship specifically supports early-career (postdoctoral) researchers from backgrounds that are under-represented in chemistry research and academia (e.g. gender, minority ethnicity, disability, disadvantaged circumstances, etc.).  The Fellowship aims to provide a supportive and collegial environment for early-career researchers to develop their research and prepare themselves for future independent roles in academia and beyond.

Christina Miller Research Fellowships honour the outstanding achievements of Dr Christina Cruickshank Miller (29 August 1899 – 16 July 2001) – a University of Edinburgh researcher and one of the first five women, the first female chemist, and one of the first deaf scientists elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

We seek candidates from diverse backgrounds, who have completed a PhD in Chemistry, or a closely related subject, and can demonstrate the potential for independent research and a future academic career. Although the successful candidate may contribute to teaching to a limited degree, the role will allow for the development of further high-quality publications from existing research; and new, independent research in the successful candidate’s area of interest. This approach is intended to provide foundational experience, support and mentorship to pursue follow-on applications for independent Fellowships.

In this 2021 round of the Christina Miller Fellowship scheme, we will be prioritising applications from candidates of minority ethnicity in the UK. Previous rounds of this fellowship have successfully helped us address aspects of gender equality, and so for this round the fellowship is particularly aimed at chemists of minority ethnicity of all genders, with/without disabilities or other characteristics under-represented in Chemistry.
