What you’ll do

At AstraZeneca, Computational Pathology is part of the Oncology Translational Medicine department within our Oncology R&D organisation. The Computational Pathology team was established with the acquisition of Definiens. At our state of the art site in Munich, we are changing the way imaging technologies are combined with other omics technologies and clinical patient data to offer unprecedented insight and impact. We empower translational science to transform cancer treatment with impactful information derived from biomedical image by innovating at the interface between Artificial Intelligence, pathology and data sciences. We currently have an open position for a Pathologist to join our Munich team and focus on digital pathology. This is a unique opportunity to play a major role in delivering life saving treatments to thousands of patients!

  • Championing the computational pathology strategy for a portfolio of drugs and overseeing the implementation of these strategies into the broader work of the research teams.

  • Collaborating with Oncology Research, TM leads and product development teams to facilitate appropriate incorporation of Computational-Pathology-based Translational Medicine strategies for molecules in early phases of development in Oncology.

  • Using your expertise to guide and challenge the use of tissue biomarkers

  • Leading the computational pathology input to the drug/ biomarker development process by coordinating the delivery of proof of concept using evidence from image analysis to facilitate the clinical evaluation of projects.

  • Evaluating the viability of computational pathology approaches based on POC studies and making decisions about whether computational approaches should be developed further.

  • Contributing in the development of innovative computational pathology diagnostics.

  • Maintaining a well-developed knowledge of scientific and technical advances that can be used in the computational pathology function to improve efficiency, effectiveness and productivity.

  • Serving as a resource for others by sharing experience within and beyond the department in your own area of expertise

  • Contributing significantly to the overall strategic direction and development of the department and aligning the departmental objectives with the business.

  • Promoting collaboration within the global AZ pathology team to ensure knowledge transfer and harmonized ways of working

  • Contributing to and ensuring the quality of Computational Pathology projects, reports, data reviews and interpretations, presentations, scientific publications and recommendations to development teams and management.

  • Driving the publication process in the above areas targeting the scientific community in general and the pathology one in particular.

  • Keeping abreast of research in the field of image analysis and machine learning for pathology

  • Ensuring pathology team members have adequate computational pathology expertise and that this expertise is properly employed by project teams.

  • Being able to lead external partnerships as they relate to tissue biomarkers and/or digital pathology.

Essential for the role

  • MD or DVM and board-certified in anatomical/surgical pathology

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to support business and technical strategic plans in scope of translational medicine and computational pathology biomarker studies

  • Strong commitment to teamwork and empowerment of cross functional team members

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry and drug development process

  • Experience in digital pathology/image analysis including multiplexed immunohistochemistry

  • Experience with computational pathology methods and practices including generation of ground truth and domain-expert supervision of model training validation and testing

  • Matrix management experience, setting goals and objectives and overseeing professional development of others

Desirable for the role

  • PhD in relevant scientific discipline

  • Experience working with external service providers and external science partners
