What you’ll do

Lead Drug Substance (DS), Drug Product (DP), Investigational Medicinal Product (IMP) and other aligned materials distribution activities for AstraZeneca development programs. Improve use of the organisation’s resources, designing and implementing flawless global distribution operations to deliver customer service levels with right quality, quantity, and cost targets. Deliver policies, standard methodologies, development plans, budgets and business continuity plans to enable distribution activities. Work collaboratively within Logistics and Clinical Supply (LCS), and develop/maintain relationships with external vendors such as Logistics Service Providers (LSPs), and with all other interfaces and partners as the need arises to ensure highly effective clinical product supply.


  • Owns delivery of distribution activities for assigned clinical studies, independently planning and leading supply strategy and execution. Communicates targets and supervises performance to ensure delivery of agreed plan in a manner that is aligned with standards and regulations, minimizes costs and improves quality

  • Uses Distribution tools, procedures and best practise to deliver efficient shipping solutions. Liaises closely with distribution vendors to supervise all shipments and ensure timely processing of excursions where applicable. Further ensures accuracy of information transfer and creation/maintenance/tracking of accurate distribution plans, import/export documents, permits etc.

  • Provides input to Interactive Web/Voice Response System (IXRS) Specifications for distribution, reviews and approves requirements, completes system specifications and participates in user acceptance testing (UAT)

  • Supervises and maintains compliance to current Good Manufacturing Practices, Safety, Health and Environment and business procedures, raising and addressing problems as they arise.

  • Undertakes distribution management, analysis and reporting via both IT and paper-based Systems

  • Employs experience and expertise in distribution management to resolve issues and problems before they disrupt program supply. At a functional level, applies skills and knowledge to learn from challenges and enable improved working practices in relation to robust clinical distribution practises

  • Supports change initiatives and promotes continuous improvement, capturing information that can be used to improve the efficiency of the distribution strategy. May include both project-initiated changes and supporting those with multi-product / portfolio impact.

  • Ensures systems and procedures are in place to assure the day-to-day functioning of the Distribution team and close interfaces. Trains, develops and supports other staff (LCS flex roles / rotational placements etc) to function optimally within the group

  • Works collaboratively with the Supply Continuity Team (SCT), LCS matrix team and all other interfaces and stakeholders as required

  • Ensures timely maintenance of current, accurate and complete IMP distribution records (hard copy and electronic as appropriate) enabling that all necessary files are available for the Product Specification File (PSF), Trial Master File (TMF) and other relevant GXP system.

  • Contributes to the operational efficiency of LCS

Essential criteria

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in basic / applied science or engineering. Equivalent level of training in service may also be considered

  • Experience in distribution operations including working understanding of import/export regulations in distributing medicinal supplies including IMP, AMP, devices and instruments used in the medical field

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and collaborate effectively within cross functional teams to deliver complex projects

Desirable criteria

  • Professional qualification in distribution

  • Specific experience in IMP management and /or distribution

  • Appropriate direct experience working in a development or technical operations environment in the pharmaceutical, scientific or health care product industry

  • Sound understanding of the drug development process and ideally also proven success in delivery of cross-functional projects and/or activities

  • Good understanding of cGMP, GCP and GDP environment and applicable Regulations and Guidance as relates to IMP distribution

  • Experience with lean management principles and tools
