Job summary

Imperial College is seeking an outstanding Executive Officer (EO) to work closely with the Provost, Professor Ian Walmsley FRS. As Executive Officer, your primary responsibility will be to facilitate the effective and efficient running of the Provost’s Office, within the complex College and wider higher education environment, coordinating as required with colleagues in the President’s Office and other senior staff.

This role will provide an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys interesting and demanding work, ensuring that Professor Walmsley is provided with appropriate information and research to inform decision making at the highest level in a multifaceted organisation. You will act as a conduit to help ensure effective information flow, both within the College and with important external contacts.

The Executive Officer will ensure that the Provost is provided with appropriate briefings, presentations and research to enable him to undertake his day to day activities effectively. The EO will manage the Operations and Projects Officer (OPO) and work closely with the Executive Assistant (EA), coordinating the EA’s work in conjunction with the Provost.

You will be required to contribute to the development of strategic College activity by undertaking research and analysis in addition to drafting, revising and editing strategic materials. You will therefore need to have first-rate analytical skills, experience in undertaking research and in drafting papers and recommendations for consideration by senior individuals and committees. In addition, you will also manage strategic projects under the direction of the Provost, scoping requirements of specific projects, which are often sensitive, and manage their delivery.

The role will require the Executive Officer to communicate widely and effectively with a range of internal and external people, including senior College staff, external stakeholders, both at home and overseas. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, confidence in dealing with a range of people and highly developed listening and communication skills. A demonstrable ability to deal with people and information with tact, sensitivity and discretion are also pre-requisites. To carry out these duties effectively, you will have project coordination skills together with ample experience of working well under pressure, to tight deadlines and with little direct supervision. You must be able to deal with complexity as a matter of course and not be daunted by change or uncertainty.

A full list of responsibilities and essential requirements can be seen in the attached Job Description.
