The Role

To further strengthen our expertise we are currently recruiting accomplished Leaders in the precision medicine space.

Precision Medicine Discovery and Development (PMDD) is a key function within the R&I Translational Science and Experimental Medicine (TSEM) department. Our mission is to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level, identify the most effective target and the right patient population, and close the gap between bench science and bedside clinical practice.

Responsibilities

PMDD is instrumental in delivering precision medicine strategies for all of our drugs, providing human validation of our targets and scientific reasons to believe for our Lifecycle investments, identifying decision making biomarkers, and delivering translational clinical substantiation.

In this role, you are responsible for building mechanistic understanding of the target and disease, through creative application of experimental methods and technologies.

You will take on a crucial leadership role that requires a strong scientific background as well as excellent people management and interpersonal skills. Your success depends on fruitful and effective collaborations with other units and so will require outstanding team working and influencing skills and a proven track record of working in partnership to ensure scientific excellence and robust delivery to projects.

Accountabilities:

  • Planning of work and long-term development of the department in close collaboration with your manager and other leaders
  • Coach, mentor, motivate and inspire your team towards enabling projects
  • Build and maintain a work environment in which scientific challenge and innovation is central
  • Precision Medicine strategies provided to all R&I projects
  • Delivery of human validation of portfolio targets by experimentally demonstrating presence and functional implication of the target in relevant disease mechanisms, with mechanistic understanding of target and disease
  • Delivery to projects by identifying and developing TE, PoM biomarkers, Decision-making and Exploratory Biomarkers, aligned with clinical development plan
  • Identification of relevant patient subgroups based on biological drivers of segmentation
  • Invention, development and implementation of key patient segmentation biomarkers
  • Develop target line of sight to clinic with TSEM colleagues, extract knowledge from large omics-datasets and back-translation of AZ clinical studies
  • Driving innovation and scientific excellence in the department through internal scientific development and external collaboration
  • Propose, establish and manage external partnerships
  • Ensure that the work produced by your department is performed with high quality in accordance with compliance processes, meeting company as well as biology standards

Essential Requirements

  • PhD/Post Doc in Life Sciences or other relevant area, alternatively MD with research background
  • Demonstrable leadership and delivery in precision medicine, biomarker discovery and application to drug discovery and development
  • 10 years of work experience in pharmaceutical R&D
  • Strong leadership capabilities with emphasis of people management and development
  • Excellent written, oral, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Experience and deep understanding of biology, pharmacology, translational medicine and clinical sciences, with pre-eminence in at least one of these area
  • A deep understanding of the drug development process, from lead identification through clinical development
  • Ability to work productively in a matrix team environment
  • Experience of career development of reporting scientists
  • Experience in the Respiratory and/or Immunology therapy areas preferable
