About the Opportunity:

Oncology Safety is a department in our Clinical Pharmacology and Safety Sciences (CPSS) function & applies innovative science to drive the design, selection and development of medicines. This group works collaboratively to deliver science from early discovery through to clinical development.

A detailed understanding of the process of targeted protein degradation has been hindered by the inability to degrade many types of cell surface proteins. We hypothesise that the process of targeted cell surface proteins for degradation requires a different mechanism using unexplored E3 ligases and degradation pathways.

You’ll be a part of a well-integrated, collaborative team of bench Biologists and Chemists, and will lead this research. You will analyse and interpret single cell imaging data and a variety of degradation assays, and design and apply innovative protein tagging systems to generate biological insight from the data generated. Integrating and interpreting proprietary and public data will generate further additional insights. By investigating key processes in targeted protein degradation, utilising cutting-edge technologies, such as automated cellular imaging combined with high-throughput degradation assays, you’ll explore how to drive cell surface receptors degradation.

This unique research project offers you the opportunity to learn data science skills, expand your single cell analysis capabilities, and explore the potential of this work through further collaboration. Our ambition is for you to publish this research in high impact journals, and share your findings via conference presentations at both national and international level.

This exciting project has the scope to influence multiple areas of science, ranging from a better understanding of cell surface receptors trafficking inside the cells to their degradation mechanism through ubiquitination. Your work will help accelerate the development of life-changing medicines for our patients!

Qualification, Skills & Experience

Required:

  • PhD (or equivalent)
  • Experience in cell biology, molecular biology or chemistry, e.g. protein trafficking studies
  • Proficient in cell culture techniques
  • Enthusiasm for exploring new approaches to bringing data together in biologically meaningful ways
  • Good networking, collaboration and teamworking skills
  • Strong planning and organisation skills
  • Ability to see opportunities, learn, and apply that learning to drive innovation

Desirable:

  • Sound understanding of basic degradation pathways, including familiarity with the ubiquitination system
  • Skilled in using bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, and data science techniques.
  • Prior experience of working on cross-disciplinary teams

This is a 3-year programme. 2 years will be a Fixed Term Contract, with a 1-year extension which will be merit based.
