Make a meaningful impact on people’s lives with life-changing medicines

Join the team where everyone feels a personal connection to the people that we impact. From our science labs to manufacturing at scale, we are committed to delivering at the highest quality. Here we turn molecules to medicines, bringing our Research & Development pipeline to life through a meticulous process of development, manufacturing, testing and delivery.

Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D)

PT&D is the bridge that turns forward-thinking science into medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain from early development activities to established commercial brands. PT&D designs and develops the active ingredients, the formulations, the processes and the devices that make up our Drug Products.

To meet patient’s needs AZ has recognised the opportunity to apply a diverse range of new modality technologies to support identification of novel therapeutics. This is exemplified by the increased number of new modalities entering clinical development – currently 30% of the early pipeline now consists of new drug modalities.

To support the development of this pipeline PT&D has established a New Modalities and Parenteral Development group. This group has accountability for developing the pipeline of both new modality projects and traditional synthetic molecules requiring parenteral delivery.

The role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Scientist: Formulation and Drug Delivery to perform an essential, scientific leadership role within the New Modalities and Parenteral Development (NMPD) group. This role focuses on Formulation & Drug Delivery as a key subject area that is essential for delivery of the diverse AZ portfolio.

The role holder will be an established professional in the formulation and development of parenteral Drug Products, ideally with experience of approaches for both traditional small molecule and new modalities (e.g. oligonucleotides, peptides/proteins, dendrimers, mRNA).

The individual will provide significant technical leadership in the area; defining innovative and robust control strategies; identifying transformative formulation technologies and providing specialist CMC drug development input to the teams delivering AZs portfolio of drug projects.

As Principal Scientist, you will be encouraged to work collaboratively in AZ (analysts, process chemists, engineers etc.) and externally (leading academics, professional organisations, technology providers etc.). You will combine strong technical expertise, with development experience and a scientific passion for your technical area.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide scientific leadership, expert technical direction, challenge and problem solving to positively impact AZ development projects

  • Contribute, directly or through coaching, to regulatory filings supporting new drug products or line extensions.

  • Proactively coach & mentor less experienced colleagues and lead networks that uplift AZ capabilities

  • Lead the development of specific components of the NMPD Formulation and Drug Delivery strategy

  • Identify transformative improvements in science and technologies that can be successfully applied to existing & future projects in the AZ portfolio – supporting achievement of business goals.

  • Recommend, gain commitment to, initiate, lead and champion new science and technology initiatives to improve Formulation & Drug Delivery capabilities

  • Share scientific output and learning both within and beyond AstraZeneca. When appropriate, file patents, publish papers/reviews in internationally recognised journals and/or present at appropriate conferences.

  • Create, drive and support a culture of scientific excellence. Act as a visible role model for scientific leadership across and beyond AZ.

All these activities will have a significant impact on the development of underpinning scientific capability and ultimately successful delivery of the current & future NMPD portfolio.

Required skills & capabilities:

  • BSc/PhD level education in a relevant field or the equivalent in experience

  • Significant experience working within a Research & Development environment in the pharmaceutical industry

  • A detailed understanding of the drug development process and how Product Development contributes to this. Extensive experience of the subject areas within Product Development and how they work together to deliver the best outcomes.

  • Significant experience in Formulation & Drug Delivery with emphasis on parenteral approaches. Ideally experience/understanding of product development requirements for new modality medicines (e.g. oligonucleotides, peptides/proteins, dendrimers, mRNA).

  • Demonstrated capability for strategy development and implementation

  • Good understanding of existing Regulatory guidelines with demonstrated application of this to authoring of regulatory submissions and interactions with regulatory authorities

  • Proven experience in developing the capability of individuals and teams of scientists and in supporting project teams through effective coaching and mentoring.

  • Demonstration of collaborative and multi-disciplinary team working to deliver a range of science and technology and drug project objectives.

  • A thorough understanding of the principles and management of SHE and cGMP.

  • Significant experience in working with external companies/partners to deliver business goals.
