Programmer for ultrasound simulation tools (Research Associate)

Job summary

We are looking to recruit a programmer to develop our world-leading ultrasound simulation tools. The Imperial College NDE group is internationally recognised in the development of ultrasound techniques to find damage, keeping planes flying safely, powerplants generating electricity and oil pipelines free from corrosion damage. The ability to simulate ultrasound is crucial in developing and maintaining our strong position, and to this end our group has developed two packages, Disperse (www.disperse.software) and Pogo (www.pogo.software), which are now used throughout the world.

­In this position, you will work with other programmers, researchers and academics with a diverse range of expertise, within one of the world’s foremost research universities. This represents a unique opportunity to develop software for both internal customers and world-wide external benefit.

Duties and responsibilities

This post sits within our Research Associate team, and you will be primarily responsible for developing existing software tools for the NDE community, including liaising with end users including researchers in the NDE Group and industrial partners. Ensuring that the software meets the needs of the users is a key output of this role which will rely on you taking initiatives in the planning and implementation of the research and programming.

Essential requirements

You should:

  • have experience and good understanding of programming in an engineering science environment, including the development and use of algorithms for numerical/mathematical calculations such as matrix calculations, optimisations, and signal processing.
  • be skilled at developing graphical user interfaces and using third-party libraries, and should have experience of using software development tools, such as debuggers, documentation generators, version control tools, etc.
  • have a PhD (or be close to completing a PhD) in Engineering, Computing, Maths or Physics for appointment to Research Associate.
  • have excellent engineering/scientific programming experience along with a good undergraduate/masters degree for appointment to Research Assistant.
  • have good knowledge of object-oriented programming in a language relevant to the subject area, ideally including C++.

This is a fixed term position for up to 18 months in the first instance.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 – £39,888 per annum.
