Reporting directly to the R&D Performance & Planning Finance Director, this role will play a pivotal role in Total R&D Financial Planning, Analysis & Reporting. This is a global position overseeing R&D Financial reporting and analysis across all sites and functions for Astra Zeneca R&D.

You will also work closely with Science Units R&D Finance FP&A Leads, including Alexion and work routinely with all members of R&D Finance to ensure quality, meaningful, and timely deliverables. As a leader you are expected to develop a deep understanding of the business and become a highly valued business partner, providing deep insights to R&D Finance Leadership and Finance Business Partners in a collaborative fashion. Finally, this role is expected to lead a variety of projects which may span well beyond general FP&A duties to identify and deliver new initiatives that aid simplification and efficient data analysis across AstraZeneca’s R&D.

This position has significant exposure to the R&D Finance VP and Senior leadership team.

Typical responsibilities:

  • Total R&D Finance Planning, Analysis, manager covering an expense budget of ~$9bn

  • Build strong networks with Group Finance, FP&A Finance Leads, wider R&D Fin. Org and Alexion R&D Fin.

  • Oversee the monthly financial close process for Total R&D Finance

  • Review, analyse, and report on monthly financial results including interaction with group finance

  • Coordinate, prepare, communicate and drive the Total R&D reporting cadence including Monthly/quarterly actuals, forecasts, LTP (long term plan) and MTP (mid-term plan), and QBR (quarterly business reviews)

  • Accelerate adoption in innovative systems, processes and procedures to drive efficiency, data quality validation and timely reporting

  • Champion systems development and support liaison, providing training and guidance as required

  • Support R&D Finance director in maintaining and deploying the R&D Fin reporting calendar to the wider R&D Fin. Organisation

  • Proactively plan and coordinate the activities of the FP&A function to deploy our core deliverables in a disciplined, structured manner.

  • Interface with all AstraZeneca R&D finance functions as required to enhance communication, information flow, and alignment

  • Interact / coordinate routinely across all AstraZeneca R&D Finance

  • Ensure compliance with all required accounting policies, procedures, standards, and processes

Essential skills and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent in Accounting, Business, Economics, or Finance

  • Excellent Finance Applications Skills: Hyperion, SAP, Power BI, Tableau, Excel, Smart View etc.

  • Demonstrated post-qualified finance experience, including direct FP&A working experience

  • Accountable to maintain an effective internal control environment as established by AstraZeneca

  • Demonstrated business partnering success interacting with, and influencing Executive Leadership

  • Strong knowledge of financial modelling and analysis, budgeting and forecasting, and generally accepted accounting principles

  • Organizational agility – builds consensus through formal and informal channels and relationships; organizationally savvy

  • Intellectual and analytical capabilities – deals exceptionally well with developing concepts and initiatives, complexity, ambiguity and multiple priorities

  • Decision quality – makes good decisions on a timely basis; balances analysis, experience and judgment

Desirable Requirements

  • Advanced Degree in Business, Economics, or Finance strongly preferred

  • ACA/ACCA strongly preferred

  • Biotechnology or pharmaceutical experience strongly preferred
