Job summary

The COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest threat posed by a respiratory virus since the 1918 H1N1 influenza pandemic. The evolving nature of the pandemic coupled with the variability in responses that countries have made to date (including in access to vaccines) results in a diverse set of challenges that modelling can help to address.

We are looking for a researcher with experience in:

  1. Epidemiological analysis – experience in epidemiological analysis of infectious disease data.
  2. Programming – strong R programming language skills
  3. Model development and parameter inference – experience in mathematical modelling and infectious disease transmission dynamics, Bayesian statistical modelling methods.

Duties and responsibilities

Areas of work include:

  • Analysis and modelling of the epidemic in the UK, informing UK government policy planning.
  • Quantifying the past and future impact of vaccination on the global COVID-19 pandemic and implications for relaxation of non-pharmaceutical interventions.
  • Quantifying the impact of new variants of concern on transmissibility, severity, vaccine effectiveness and epidemic trajectory

Essential requirements

A PhD (for appointment to Research Associate) or a first / masters degree (or equivalent (for appointment to Research Assistant) in one of the following areas: epidemiology, statistics (including computational statistics and machine learning methods), bioinformatics, mathematics, or a similarly quantitative discipline. You will need experience of statistics or mathematical modelling and infectious disease transmission dynamics, Bayesian statistical modelling methods and strong R programming skills.

Further information

This role is offered on a full time, fixed term basis until 31 March 2023
