Research Associate in microfluidic reactor systems

Job summary

­The Electrochemical Science & Engineering group is seeking a motivated researcher to join the group to develop automated high-throughput microfluidic experimentation for electrosynthesis of high-value chemicals.

Microfluidics has many unique features such as faster reaction, easy parallelisation and automation, precise control over reaction conditions, easy integration of analytical techniques, thus it provides an effective tool for studying and optimising chemical and electrochemical reactions. The successful candidate will carry out experimental research into microfluidic reactor systems. The detailed work will include design, fabrication and validation of an automated multifunctional microfluidic platform for characterising and optimising a series of selected electrosynthesis processes.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team involving researchers in intelligent systems, circular economy and industrial decarbonisation.

Duties and responsibilities

You will:

  • Create automated high-throughput microfluidic experimentation for electrosynthesis of high-value chemicals
  • Assist modellers in data collection for their development of machine learning models
  • Assist with the preparation of reports and presentations for project review meetings
  • Present findings to other consortium members and a range of technical and non-technical stakeholders from the policy, business and civil society communities
  • Communicating insights authoritatively and with clarity, including writing clear, concise analytical reports, conference papers, and academic journal papers

Essential requirements

  • You must hold, or be close to completing a PhD in a relevant discipline, or have equivalent experience.
  • Experience in CAD software is essential.
  • You must have experience in design, fabrication, assembling and characterisation of microfluidic chemical or electrochemical reactors
  • You should be knowledgeable in physics of microfluidics,
  • Knowledge of flow chemistry and/or electrochemistry is vital.
