Research Associate in Physics-based Modelling of Lithium-ion batteries

Job summary

The Electrochemical Science & Engineering Group is looking to hire a researcher to develop Li-ion battery models to join our diverse and expanding team at the centre of cutting-edge research in electrochemical storage. Funded by the Faraday Institution, Innovate UK and Industry, we work with Industrial collaborators to develop the next generation of batteries and Battery Management Systems with the goal of improving performance and lifetime.

­This position will focus on developing physics-based modelling tools that capture the underlying physics which govern performance and degradation, with a focus on quantifying the errors in degradation prediction. This role includes collaborating with an industry partner to use knowledge on degradation prediction to develop better battery management algorithms.

Although this post is primarily simulation based, the postholder will need to be involved in the parametrisation and validation of models from experimental data collected in the group.

Our research group is interdisciplinary has a cross-departmental network across four different departments within Imperial College London. We work at the interface between science and engineering of electrochemical devices. With over 50 postdoctoral & postgraduate researchers, we are a vibrant team with industrial and academic contacts.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be required to:

  • Parametrise, validate and upgrade physics-based models of lithium-ion battery coupled degradation
  • Develop techniques to account for the magnitude of uncertainty in degradation prediction
  • Work with the wider experimental team to gather data for model parametrisations and validation
  • Take initiatives in the planning and implementation of research

You will also be expected to plan and conduct your own work, publishing papers and presenting your work at national and international conferences.

Essential requirements

  • ­Appointment at Assistant level requires a degree in a relevant subject area (Physical Sciences, Engineering or Mathematics). Research Associates will need to have completed a PhD (or equivalent) in a pertinent area.
  • You must have experience of working in a research environment, in academia or industry.
  • Experience of multiphysics modelling is essential, as is knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures.

This is a fixed term position for up to 15 months.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 – £43,888 per annum.
