The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a Research Support Officer to provide administrative support to the daily operations of the Thermofluids Division. This role fits within the Research & Finance Administrative team, and will have regular interactions with Academics, Researchers and Students within the Research Division. The postholder will provide financial assistance to Academics in managing their research grants as well as being front facing for general queries from other members of the Division and their visitors.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering hosts more than 200 staff members and around 180 postgraduate students. One of three core research cohorts, the Thermofluids division comprises thirteen Academics and their researchers. Our Academic activity is supported by the Research & Finance team, who provide support in all areas relating to research awards and the staff and research students in the department.

Duties and responsibilities

  • You will be responsible for the administrative procedures within the Thermofluids Division, supporting Academics and Researchers in their da-to-day activity.
  • With support from the wider finance team you will prepare documentation to assist with the smooth operational running of grants and reconciliations.
  • You will champion a positive culture and strengthen relationships in the Division, acting as the front-of-house for staff and students.
  • You will support the pastoral care of Divisional research students.
  • You will act as the Department’s First aid coordinator, organising training and ensuring first aid procedures are kept up-to-date

Essential requirements

  • You should be educated to degree level or have equivalent experience
  • Experience of providing administrative support, including a good understanding of finance is essential
  • You must be able to liaise effectively with a variety of stakeholders, both internal and external, and have experience of conveying information clearly and effectively.
