In Early Oncology – a global community of over 1000 people – we work to bring the next wave ​of oncology drugs from target identification and into the clinic. To help us achieve our goal to transform the treatment of cancer we are investigating new therapies to target treatment-resistant cancers and exploring our drugs in earlier stage disease. As the Science Communications Specialist you will help deliver the tactics in the Early Oncology communications strategy and ensure events and content are delivered to a high standard and to agreed timelines.

What you’ll do

Are you a passionate science communicator who thrives working with a diverse group of people? This is a fantastic opportunity to bring our Early Oncology vision to life through communications and inspire the Early Oncology community. As the Science Communications Specialist you will help bring the Early Oncology vision to life through communications and deliver the tactics in the internal communications strategy. Working in the Early Oncology communications team, you’ll support the development of content that captures the impact of Early Oncology work and drive engagement with this via a variety of channels. You will report to the Scientific Communications Lead for Early Oncology, be a member of the Oncology R&D Communications Network and collaborate with other teams across AstraZeneca.

  • Partner with scientists in Early Oncology to produce engaging content that tells the scientific story and captures the impact of Early Oncology work (including pipeline/project milestones, publications, scientific congresses)

  • Maximise engagement with this content via a variety of channels

  • Support the delivery of Early Oncology internal engagement events (e.g. Townhalls, broadcasts, seminars) including content development, audience polling, production, scheduling

  • Design and own the communications team measurement strategy to capture the impact of tactics and inform strategy adjustments

  • Actively seek out opportunities to elevate the work of Early Oncology across the enterprise, including bringing Early Oncology scientist voices into priority internal and external forums

  • Champion the use of Workplace (internal social media platform) and coach Early Oncology team members on using it effectively

  • Maintain communications resources on SharePoint Online and drive engagement with these

  • Coordinate Early Oncology input into monthly reports and employee briefing packs

  • Collaborate with communications leads across AstraZeneca to tell an integrated and collaborative Early Oncology story

Essential for the role

  • BSc or MSc in life sciences discipline

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical drug discovery and development process

  • Experience in crafting impactful scientific communications for a range of difference audiences

  • Strong influencing, networking and team working skills

  • A proven track record of delivering tasks in a timely manner

  • Comfortable working in an evolving environment e.g. deadline changes and priority shifts

  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills

Desirable for the role

  • PhD in life sciences discipline

  • Scientific in-depth knowledge in the Oncology field
