What you’ll do

The Cell Culture & Fermentation Sciences (CCFS) department is responsible for delivering on and advancing AstraZeneca’s mammalian cell culture upstream process development capabilities by working as an interdisciplinary team passionate about process optimization of a wide range of drug development projects, internal technology development and external collaborations. Upstream Bioprocess Development (UBD) is a team within CCFS and has a primary focus on optimization of bioreactor processes for manufacture of recombinant proteins for use as human therapeutics.

You will be part of a team responsible for operation and maintenance of large scale (50L-500L) single use bioreactor systems running fed batch and perfusion based mammalian cell culture processes for the supply of large quantities of recombinant proteins (and other derivatives) required to support the drug development process.

Planning and performing cell culture work and operating innovative large scale bioreactor processes supporting ongoing candidate drug projects within a project plan. This includes;

  • Routine maintenance / passage of mammalian cell cultures for bioreactor inoculum generation

  • Be responsible for planning and preparing for large scale material supply batches according to project requirements.

  • Maintain and operate large scale and bench scale bioreactor systems according to defined process descriptions for large scale material supply.

  • Writing up batch records, supporting documentation and maintaining electronic databases as required meeting required deadlines

  • Preparing and giving presentations to update relevant teams on bioreactor process batch performance

  • Participate in development of new technologies and processes associated with bioreactor processing as required

  • Have responsibility for maintenance of bioreactor processing related equipment.

  • Implement and promote AstraZeneca’s Health and Safety practices including the regulations governing COSHH, biological agents and genetically modified organisms as detailed in relevant AstraZeneca risk assessments.

  • Participation in upstream bioprocess development programs (including the coordination, planning and execution of practical experimental activities, procedure and report preparation, data approval, trending and tracking), with co-ordination of workloads and maintaining required quality standards

  • Liaising with other large scale bioreactor groups within AstraZeneca to share knowledge and apply new processing methods and technology developments to Cambridge large scale processing systems as applicable.

  • Demonstrating the value of AstraZeneca Cambridge technology by communicating scientific information to team members and colleagues

Essential criteria

  • Degree in a biological sciences subject with relevant practical laboratory experience or PhD in a relevant biological / bioprocessing / biochemical engineering sciences subject.

  • Experience in mammalian cell culture and protein expression in an industrial or academic environment (CHO cell culture preferred).

  • Experience with bioreactor systems for mammalian suspension cell culture (bench scale to large scale)

  • Initiative, proactive, good communicator, great teammate and excellent scientific methodology

  • High level of attention to detail

  • Good organisational and planning skills

  • Able to operate independently with minimal direction

  • Ability to optimally troubleshoot.

  • Curiosity about continuous improvement of the technology

Desirable criteria

  • Experience with fed batch and perfusion based bioreactor processes.

  • Experience of implementing PAT tools into bioreactor processing

  • Experience or knowledge in biochemical engineering, coding/scripting for automated processes (such as MFCS/Win S-88)
