Scientist, Oncology Bioscience

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Oncology Bioscience group in London as a laboratory based scientist. You will become part of a large team of bioscientists and play a pivotal role in the delivery of robust and high quality ex vivo data to support drug discovery projects within the Oncology portfolio. Working collaboratively with other disciplines across AstraZeneca you will have the opportunity to contribute to biomarker discovery and development for early and clinical phase projects. You should have a background in Oncology or a related field and a strong passion for experimental work and delivering data from the laboratory. You will use your scientific judgement, ability to analyse data, lab experience and communication skills to contribute to experimental design and interpretation for either early or late stage drug discovery programmes. As a Scientist within Bioscience, you’ll have a good understanding of the range of procedures relating to bioanalysis/bioscience. You will expertly design and conducts laboratory projects/experiments, develop methods, generate interpret and report scientific data. You’ll also be proficient in trouble shooting and theory.

What you’ll do

  • Executes routine drug discovery research experiments independently by applying the techniques of Bioconjugation of small molecules to antibodies and related scaffolds

  • Perform cell based in vitro assays involving small molecules and bioconjugates

  • Works independently within a team and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the efficient relay of information

  • Maintains a well-developed understanding of approaches to Bioconjugation techniques and cell based bioassays, applying a broader functional knowledge to support the team

  • Communicates results to team members and is involved in the interpretation of data with little or no guidance in a clear and concise manner, with a clear understanding of its implications within drug discovery

  • Regularly shares relevant external published papers with peers

  • Ensures own work, and work of peers, follows Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations

Essential for the role

  • Ph.D and/ or M.Sc in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical engineering or relevant discipline

  • B.Sc in above disciplines with relevant industrial experience

  • Deep Understanding of chemistry and protein biochemistry

  • Hands-on experience in a chemical/biochemical/bioassay laboratory

  • Experience with GE AKTA system, Unicorn chromatography software

  • Experience in working with cell culture/sterile techniques and GraphPad Prism

  • Experience of protein/bioconjugate analysis, characterisation and quantitation by UV/Vis spectroscopy, size-exclusion/hydrophobic interaction/ion exchange chromatography, HPLC and LCMS

  • A track-record of protein modification/purification experience

  • Antibody-drug conjugates experience might be beneficial
