Follow the science to explore and innovate

Join the team unlocking the power of what science can do. We are working towards treating, preventing, modifying and even curing some of the world’s most complex diseases. Here we have the potential to grow our pipeline and positively impact the lives of billions of patients around the world.

This is an opportunity to join our Safety Innovation Team to help drive the development of safe and innovative RNA therapies and associated delivery systems to improve patients’ lives.

Safety Innovation (SI) is a global department sited within the Safety Sciences arm of Clinical Pharmacology and Safety Sciences (CPSS) function, where application of innovative science drives the design, selection and development of safer medicines. We collaborate with other departments both within and external to CPSS on novel drug programs from early discovery through to clinical development. We work with a wide range of drug modalities targeting a number of disease indications.

Our Safety Innovation team uses cutting edge platforms and in vitro/ex vivo models to develop bespoke solutions to address potential immune safety questions across a wide portfolio.

What you’ll do:

In this key role, you will apply your existing RNA problem-solving expertise alongside that of the collective team to develop innovative strategies to understand and mitigate unwanted safety adverse reactions to RNA therapeutics and the nuances of nanoparticle delivery systems.

This will include investigation matrix leadership of this novel safety area working closely with safety scientists in other areas of expertise to fully understand the safety profile.

You should be able to seek-out and deploy diverse areas of RNA safety knowledge into coherent strategies and bespoke investigations in order to address the key safety issues for mRNA and nanoparticle systems. This will involve initiating collaborations with academic teams externally to access the leading scientific knowledge in the field.

You will be responsible for providing expert advice on the safety strategy for RNA therapies and delivery systems to safety representatives on project teams whilst leading problem-solving activities using in vitro and ex vivo models.

This role will involve close interactions with many other AZ scientists and collaborators in a highly international environment. You will be expected to continuously develop your RNA biology and safety expertise and scientific network, regularly presenting our innovative science through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at selected scientific conferences. This will enable you to influence our safety strategy, develop our technical problem-solving capabilities, and enhance our external scientific reputation.

You should be highly motivated, innovative, meticulous, creative, well organised and able to work independently and collaboratively when designing and performing experiments and will be expected to lead and prioritise multiple projects and tasks in line with the objectives of the safety and RNA therapy project teams.
