Senior Data Scientist / Associate Director in Bioinformatics

The Informatics Specialist will apply scientific domain-specific knowledge (in chemo, bioinformatics) and/or clinical disease area expertise, specialized data processing techniques, analytical and machine learning capabilities to extract scientific insight and hypotheses from data. The role will work in partnership with scientists and clinicians to support the generation of innovative solutions, within defined project scope and aligned to established frameworks, which support decision-making in pre-clinical, development and post-market activities.

What you’ll do

We are now seeking an innovative Bioinformatics researcher with strong desire to be a key contributor for establishing and developing safe RNA therapeutics such as novel amplifying RNAs, while learning new frontiers in RNA therapeutics and computational biology. You will join us in the Imaging, AI & Data Analytics, within the Clinical pharmacology and Safety Sciences (CPSS) unit at AstraZeneca.

You will partner with CPSS scientists and interact across the R&D therapeutic area units spanning multiple strategic global locations (US, UK, Sweden) for enabling safe and efficacious therapeutic RNA-based molecules in multiple disease areas. You will use computational approaches to generate biological insights, enable new computational capabilities, and will be key in driving the computational efforts in establishing and developing novel, and innovative RNA-based therapeutics.

The position is a rare opportunity to gain experience in a variety of computational approaches relating to RNA therapeutics and work with industry leaders, while publishing and contributing directly to the development of future drugs across many diseases.


  • Drive hypothesis generation by applying computational biology approaches, data integration, and biological knowledge
  • Build and/or Implement new computational biology capabilities to translate biological data into insights.
  • Be responsible for pioneering and implementing novel off-target analysis and mechanistic analysis platforms
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Help educate and train AstraZeneca colleagues in computational biology and related areas
  • Identify and proactively help build strategic directions in computational biology

Essential Requirements

  • A Doctoral degree in computational biology or related field (e.g., Biological science, Computer science), preferably with postdoctoral or equivalent experience in RNA biology
  • Demonstrated experience in multiple areas in at least three of the following fields of bioinformatics: DNA/RNA-Seq, gene expression analysis, GWAS, systems biology, and gene pathways/networks
  • Demonstrated expertise in R, Python, or Perl
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of many bioinformatics tools relating to genomic (DNA/RNA) sequence analysis
  • Strong understanding of computational biology tools and databases.
  • A keen demonstrated interest in learning data science techniques for biological problems

Desirable requirements

  • Hands-on experience in data analysis of therapeutic oligonucleotides (e.g., small RNA analogs, amplifying RNAs etc)
  • Strong knowledge of RNA biology and/or chemically modified RNAs.
  • Knowledge of drug discovery or pharmaceutical development
