Translational Medicine supports programs in all phases of development and focuses on making measurements on human samples to understand why, and identify which, patients benefit from particular treatments, what doses and schedules of treatments to use and the mechanisms underlying the development of resistance to treatment.
In oncology studies Translational Medicine are responsible for the biomarker strategy and implementation which includes all exploratory analyses of global clinical trial samples and prospective testing for trial recruitment where required. What you’ll do
AstraZeneca is seeking a scientist to support Translational Medicine efforts in Oncology as a member of the Clinical Proteomics team located in Gaithersburg, MD. The scientist should have experience in mass spectrometry-based FFPE proteomics with laser microdissection technologies and will carry out translational studies involving biomarker quantitation from clinical samples (e.g., tumor biopsies) to accelerate clinical development of AZ’s oncology drugs.
This position requires an individual with outstanding technical skills and scientific experience as well as excellent communication and collaborative skills. The individual must be able to work in a fast-paced clinical and product development organization to translate fundamental insights using proteomics into targeted therapeutics and biomarker hypotheses that can be tested in clinical trials. The successful candidate is expected to drive the publication of proteomics data in top-tier scientific, technical or medical journals.
Develop, validate and implement cell-enrichment technologies compatible with MS-based FFPE proteomics.
Process clinical samples (e.g., FFPE tissue, frozen tissue, plasma) for translational and clinical proteomics studies according to SOPs.
Be responsible for state-of-the-art laser microdissection technology for generating high-quality tissue samples and operate LC-MS to demonstrate clinical utilities of protein biomarkers.
Ensure high-quality data generation by applying strict QC process. Stay current with the latest technologies to improve the protocols.
Develop and implement a focused digital workflow that enables streamlined tissue image analysis for FFPE proteomics. Automate laser microdissection processes for high-throughput clinical studies, with direct collaboration with Oncology-pathologists and computational pathology team.
Implement pathology-guided microdissection for spatial proteomics.
Analyze data, summarize results, and present key results at functional reviews and project reviews
Essential for the role
M.S. in bioanalytics or related fields with 6-10 years of post-graduate experience in clinical biomarker development in pharmaceutical industrial.
Experience in FFPE proteomics for oncology biomarker studies. Familar with various quantitation technologies (PRM and DIA) and their clinical applications.
Strong theoretical understanding of histology and practical knowledge of processing human tissue samples for bottom-up proteomics.
Extensive experience in instrumentation, trouble shooting, QC, standardization for proteomics workflow and pipeline development.
Coding skills (R, Python) to analyze multidimensional molecular data and to take on automation project.
Familar with tissue image analysis tools including but not limited to HALO AI, Arivis, and Aperio.
Experience in working independently and collaboratively in a matrixed environment with some experience in project management.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
