Business area

Global External Sourcing (GES) operates as virtual site networks, sourcing and supplying Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), Formulated and Packed (F&P) products and Devices from external contractors.

GES has an important role to play in delivering Operations’ strategy by optimising our already established supply to customer, delivering flawless new product introductions and driving simplification in our supply chains.

GES also plays an important role in the acquisition of new businesses and divestment of brands to support Operations strategy. In this cross functional, global network GES works closely with functions like Procurement, Process Technology and Development, Global Supply Chain and Strategy and Global Quality.

We now have an opportunity for a Supplier Director to join our team in Shanghai.

The role

The role holder will be managing a team of Supplier Managers and is accountable for overall management and leadership of the team and works collaboratively to ensure a consistent approach to supplier management across API, F&P & Devices suppliers globally. The supplier management organisation is accountable for all aspects of supplier performance, and for ensuring our suppliers maintain standards and operate in a manner that protects our licence to operate and safeguards AstraZeneca patients and reputation.

You will also work with colleagues within GES and at the supplier to ensure timely delivery of high-quality products to the customers and lead change and continuous improvement programmes with the supplier. You will be accountable for the total portfolio of projects and products for the supplier in respect to performance and delivery as well as strategy. You will develop strong relationships with the supplier and act as the key contact for the supplier in the AZ relationship.

Additional responsibilities

  • Part of Supplier Management function Leadership Team.

  • Accountable for Supplier delivery, performance and ongoing performance improvement to ensure:

  • supply received on time;

  • product is of specified quality

  • delivered in line with contractual framework

  • suppliers operate in line with regulatory and AZ Standards

  • Integrates supplier management ways of working and builds capability to manage global and local products across multiple geographies.

  • Manage change projects on behalf of GES or the Supplier Management team

  • In collaboration with other functions (API, F&P, Device Governance Board), develops and implements AstraZeneca’s supplier strategies.

  • Share successful ways of working across supplier management function and GES where relevant

  • Enable change across supplier management function and GES or AstraZeneca where relevant

Essential for the role

  • Degree or equivalent professional qualification/experience

  • Strong stakeholder management in a customer facing role, partnering to achieve jointly agreed objectives

  • Experience of manufacturing and supply chain management and driving performance and improvements

  • Understanding of quality principles and GMP requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate a range of influencing techniques

  • Sound financial skills and budget management

  • Experience of identifying, implementing and managing business metrics

Desirable for the role

  • Line or matrix management experience

  • Change management

  • Previous supplier management experience or external service provision

  • Process management experience
