Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D)
PT&D are the bridge that turns brilliant science into actual medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain, designing and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices required to support new medicines – from supplies for use in early toxicology studies and clinical trials to developing the technology to ensure drugs can be scaled up for commercial manufacture.
We now have an opportunity for a Team Manager within our Chemical Development business area, within PT&D.
The Team Manager will be responsible for a team of 12-14 scientists that play a critical role in the advancement and deployment of Science supporting drug substance Route design and Process design in Chemical Development and Early Chemical Development, specifically in:
Chemo-catalysis, including asymmetric processes, gaseous reactions, electrochemistry and photo-redox
Automation and High throughput experimentation (HTE), including solubility and advanced analytical methods
New Synthetic Methodologies, including sustainable synthesis that directly contribute to our zero carbon ambition
All these activities will have a significant impact on the speed, quality and cost of the AstraZeneca development portfolio, the overall success of PT&D as well as ensuring the commercial viability of the medicine. The role, therefore, has a significant impact on both financial and reputational aspects of the business.
Ensures delivery of SHE compliance, ensuring that all work is carried out with regard to AstraZeneca and external regulatory policies and standards.
Works with scientific leaders within the team to set the strategy and ensures the optimal delivery of the science within their area of Catalysis, High Throughput and Synthesis Technologies.
Coaches direct reports and others for enhanced individual and team performance on an ongoing basis.
Will build strong, collaborative relationships with R&D groups, specialist areas of computational and predictive chemistry.
Pro-active to enhance the reputation of the company in scientific circles by representing AstraZeneca, through external presentations, publications, membership of working parties and through academic collaborations.
Experience, Education, Specialist Skills

Have a good understanding of the fundamental science of Catalysis, Synthetic Methodologies, High Throughput experimentation and how this effectively contributes to Route and Process design.
Likely to be a graduate or Ph.D with a number of years-experience within the business and industry or have the equivalent in experience
Have the experience or capability to lead and manage a team of scientists.
Have a thorough understanding of principles, applications and management of SHE
Have good communication skills and strong operational relationships with customers
