Up to 40 funded PhD places available at EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training at the University of Leeds

The EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) bring together diverse areas of expertise in order to train researchers to address engineering and science related problems for the benefit of society. They draw on world class and internationally recognised research from a range of disciplines. CDTs are unlike traditional PhDs in that you get to be part of a cohort from day one, and support each other throughout the process.

Each of the CDTs listed below have up to 10 fully funded places available on their programmes, for September 2021 entry:

Artificial Intelligence for Medical Diagnosis and Care aims to transform clinical practice through the use of AI, with a focus on cancer. Research areas come under three broad themes: Screening and Early Detection; Diagnosis; Therapy and Care. Application deadline: 16th April 2021.

Fluid Dynamics research areas come under six broad themes, energy and transport, environmental flows, geophysical and astrophysical flows, biomedical flows, industrial processes and underpinning methods for fluid dynamics.
Application deadline7th April 2021. W: https://fluid-dynamics.leeds.ac.uk/

Molecules to Product will train tomorrow’s research leaders with the skills and know-how in designing, characterising and developing the next generation of chemical and material-based products that deliver superior performance and properties. The vision is to underpin a ‘design and supply’ paradigm instead of the current road map of inventing, developing then manufacturing This approach will assist industry to mitigate against wasted development time and costs and to focus on products and processes where the risk of failure is reduced.
Application deadline: 19th April 2021.  W: http://moleculestoproduct.leeds.ac.uk/

Water and Waste Infrastructure Systems Engineered for Resilience (Water-WISER) research addresses the challenge of providing resilient, effective water, sanitation, and waste management/reuse services in the cities of the future. The focus is on developing new technologies, financial tools, institutional arrangements, responsive planning, and embedding ideas into action on the ground in rapidly growing cities in emerging economies.
Application deadline: 30th April 2021. W: https://www.waterwisercdt.ac.uk/

‘I feel that the CDTs offer excellent experience in applications of academic research in both academia and industry, and being part of a cohort has been great, especially working alongside people from different academic backgrounds’. Hannah Kreczak, CDT student

We welcome scholarship applications from all suitably-qualified candidates, but UK black and minority ethnic (BME) researchers are currently under-represented in our Postgraduate Research community, and we would therefore particularly encourage applications from UK BME candidates. All scholarships will be awarded on the basis of merit.

We are able to consider flexibility in how the programme is studied for those students unable to join the programme as a fulltime student. Please get in touch with us if you would like to explore this.
